#Faiths4ClimateJustice – Multi faith service

The multi-faith Australian Religious Response to Climate Change (ARRCC) is working in partnership with the Pacific Conference of Churches on a global campaign of GreenFaith International called Faiths 4 Climate Justice, in the lead up to COP27.

On Thursday October 13th people of all faiths both in Australia and around the Pacific will come together to show support for an open letter to Prime Minister Albanese, signed by senior faith leaders both from Australia and the Pacific, calling on the Australian Government to:

  • Stop approving new coal and gas projects
  • End public subsidies for coal and gas projects
  • Actively participate in creating a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to phase out fossil fuels and support a just transition.

These issues are right at the top of the political agenda right now both domestically and when it comes to what Pacific nations have been calling on Australia to do.

In support of this open letter there will be multi-faith services in places of worship across Australia and the Pacific on the same day.

The letter and multi-faith service will also be pushing for serious action on climate justice by calling on the Australian Government to:

  • Fully respect First Nations peoples’ rights to protect Country
  • Re-start contributions to the United Nations Green Climate Fund
  • Help workers in extractive industries prosper with more sustainable jobs

Multi-faith services will be held in the morning of October 13th at prominent places of worship to make it clear to the new government what people of faith want them to do. ARRCC are in the process of organising with faith leaders to host these services. More may be listed as time goes on, along with start and finish times as these are confirmed. There will also be overnight vigils in many locations the night beforehand through the night. The services are open to people of all faiths and none.
