Why not explore mentoring with young people?

Pulse is passionate about mentoring young people. Are you not sure where to start or how to go about it? In preparation for KCO we have created a short training video to encourage people to explore mentoring young leaders.

Faith is something that is caught not taught, a mentoring relationship gives you and your congregation the opportunity to build that faith-based relationship with a young person so they can see your faith in action first hand.

We wanted to remind people that all young people have an opportunity to share their gifts to help grow God’s reign in the world. Our task is to help the young person sees themselves as God sees them and find a place where they can share what God has given them.

In the video, we explore how mentoring young people and letting them have a go builds resilience, encourages them in discipleship and strengthens their connection to God and the congregation.

There are 5 key points:

  1. See the young person for who they are.

2. Have different options available for young people to explore leadership.

3. Get other adults to help mentor.

4. Let the young person have a go.

5. Embrace and implement their ideas.

As mentors for young people we have a responsibility to let them explore leadership safely, teaching them about making great choices, learning from their mistakes and protecting them from those who are quick to discourage.

Our video is an introduction to the space of mentoring. In the next couple of weeks, we will be launching our full online mentoring training module. It takes about 20 minutes and helps you think through key areas to consider when starting to mentor a young person. Stay tuned!
