KCO’s Planet of Superheroes

When over 150 children registered for the annual Kids Camp Out (KCO), the Pulse Team from Uniting Mission & Education knew that it was going to be a very special weekend creating ‘Planet Superheroes’.

For a weekend in early March, children, families, church leaders and community members from 13 churches across the NSW/ACT Synod gathered together.

From as far away as Canberra, Goulburn and Orange, to South Western Sydney, Western Sydney, the Blue Mountains and North Shore, students from Years 3 – 6 came together for this unique Christian children’s opportunity. Participants were also supported by targeted high school students in leadership training.

Pulse Field Officer, Siosiana (Joyce) Tangi, was part of the coordination team, and said the “Planet Superheroes” theme was perfect for the inspiration filled weekend.

“The aim of the weekend was to inspire and empower these young hearts to understand and conserve our environment and Gods Creation – we really explored… How can we help save and preserve God’s World?” said Soisiana.

“The importance of what we do now, in terms of recycling, reusing and how we preserve our environment is what will affect their future.

“As we became Superheroes for the Planet (throughout the weekend) the big discussion was ‘How can you help save Gods Creation?’”

Uniting Earth Ministry’s expert in eco-theology, Jessica Morthorpe and Leura Uniting Church member, Stephanie Garland lead the ecology, environment and ministry learning at this year’s Kids Camp Out.

The weekend was packed with games, worship, celebration and opportunities for church groups to develop old and new friendships and discipleship.

“KCO was a truly inspiring inter-generational community weekend. The Pulse team would like to thank and acknowledge everyone that contributed to creating the KCO community which creating an environment of fun and creation.

“We thank the parents for their assistance with catering and camping, as well as the young leaders for shaping and leading the program.”

Soisiana went on to say that the weekend provided a valuable opportunity to engage with young people, parents and church leaders through the Uniting Church Listening Campaign.

This year KCO welcomed back many old friends as well as congregations who participated for the first time including Carlton– Ramsgate Uniting Church and Quakers Hill.

“Plus we enjoyed reuniting with members of the Corrimal Region Uniting Church which have used KCO as a strategic opportunity for their young leaders to prepare, engage and reflect as a team,” said Soisiana.

With another successful weekend done and dusted, the team is already looking forward to the next Kids Camp Out.
